On November 1st, South Ward Environmental Alliance Executive Director, Kim Gaddy and Environmental Justice Organizer, Asada Rashidi attended the in person Fall Gathering hosted by Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation’s Momentum Fund at the Launch Pad located Downtown Newark, NJ. | October 29th from 10am-3pm, bright and early Saturday morning to start the weekend off right. Clinton Hill Community Action (CHCA) hosted their second annual fall pumpkin patch. The activities consisted of Pumpkin painting, Cider making, cooking demonstrations, Glass blowing, Lantern making, Costume contest, petting zoo, Farm stand, Hayrides, and music with a live Band. | Wednesday, October 27, 2022 the South Ward Promise Neighborhood hosted their “All Partner Meeting Soiree” to celebrate their past five years, spotlighting the collaborative work they have done since the inception of their organization. |

This past month (October), South Ward Environmental Alliance co-hosted two Environmental Justice bus tours with Ironbound Community Corporation. The EJ tours traveled through the Port of Newark, the Dayton Street Neighborhood of the South Ward and Ironbound section of East Ward. | Environmental Justice Organizer Asada Rashidi was awarded the Rising Star Award at the 50th Anniversary event for Clean Water Action. | 2022 Legislative and Conservation Leadership Award Ceremony held at the Liberty house restaurant in Jersey City NJ. The evening was blessed with positivity and the scenery was spectacular, cocktail hour was around 6pm - 7pm. Dinner was served on the main floor as well as the speeches from awardees of the hour. The host Greg Remaud set the tone of the evening by acknowledging his staff and the great work of NY/NJ Baykeeper. |
Executive Director and Founder Kim Gaddy received the Conservation Leadership Award at the NJ/NY Bay Keeper Fall Gala. | South Ward Environmental Alliance, Ironbound Community Corporation and Clean Water Action scored a victory with the delivery of the Statement from leaders of the 111 group New Jersey coalition against the Manchin/Schumer dirty side deal to Senator Booker's office in Newark. | Congratulations to the Good Jobs Clean Air Coalition on the Make the Road New Jersey, 2022 People’s Power Awards. SWEA and the Coalition was recognized for their year of building and lifting community voices to fight to keep our communities safe from environmental destruction by kicking out Amazon from the Newark Airport. |
On September 24th, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center held their annual Alma Beatty Health and Wellness Fair at the Marquis “Bo” Porter Sports Complex. SWEA staff members Asada Rashidi and James Young hosted a table at the fair and were able to speak to residents about what South Ward Environmental Alliance has to offer. | On August 24th and 25th, the South Ward Environmental Alliance hosted part two of their 2022 Truck Count and Air Monitoring project in the South Ward of Newark. The goal was to highlight the extensive amount of truck traffic and diesel pollution that comes through the South Ward each day. During the truck count days, participants counted 6,857 medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks traveling through five intersections of the South Ward from three designated time periods of one hour. | Newark native Faith Christian, a summer intern with the TCNJ Bonner Institute—a group of students dedicated to service and social change in and around the Trenton area invited Kim Gaddy, New Jersey Environmental Director, Clean Water Action to be a speaker at the TCNJ students of the Environmental Sustainability Council and caretakers of the TCNJ Campus Garden orientation meeting. |
During the week of August 15th, South Ward Environmental Alliance’s Executive Director, Kim Gaddy and Environmental Justice Organizer, Asada Rashidi traveled to New Mexico for the five-day convening of the Solidarity, Support, and Solutions (S³) Committee, a subcommittee of the Moving Forward Network. | The South Ward Environmental Alliance (SWEA) embarked on a 7-day trip to Long Beach, California for an environmental justice youth convention. During the trip, staff members met with Angelo Logan, director of the Moving Forward Network (MFN) and co-founder of East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ). | South Ward Environmental Alliance staff, Asada Rashidi and Haneef Campbell joined the City of Newark Office of Sustainability and the Newark Green Team as well as other organizations for Newark's First Green Fair at River Day. |
Kim Gaddy, Executive Director, South Ward Environmental Alliance participated in the Environmental Justice tour of the South and East Wards for the Climate Justice Ambassadors. She highlighted how the Dayton street neighborhood is surrounded by industry, railroads, highways, a superfund site, brownfields and the largest metal recycling facility in the world. | South Ward Environmental Alliance Staff, Asada Rashidi and Haneef Campbell joined United Parks as One National Night Out with a few other community organizations at Mildred Helms Park on Tuesday, August 2nd. It was a very fun-filled and joyous event for all, starting from the music to the various games and interactive masterpieces put to display for the eyes of our community. National night out with the South Ward of Newark is no event to miss! | |
